Inside Autocade
Proton Waja. 2000–11 (prod. over 292,556 sold). 4-door sedan, 4-door LWB sedan. F/F, 1584 cm³ (I4 OHC), 1597, 1598, 1783, 1998 cm³ (I4 DOHC). Proton’s first ground-up model, though originally launched with a Mitsubishi 1·6 until its own-designed engines came on stream. Decent handling, thanks to Proton’s ownership of Lotus at the time, but not that well resolved as a package, and interior fittings left something to be desired. Decent levels of equipment, but not that well priced abroad. Stretched model, Chancellor, from 2005, with 2·0-litre Mitsubishi engine. Facelifted in 2006. Exported to the UK and Pakistan as Impian.

Originally dubbed Minica 70, Mitsubishi pioneered with a three-door hatchback in the kei class. Rigid rear axle. Van was essentially the hatch with a more upright tailgate. Annual upgrades, with name often changing with the year (70, 71, 72, 73). Skipper coupé added in May 1971, styling inspired by the Mitsubishi Colt Galant GTO. Mid-term changes in September 1971 when the car became Minica 72, gaining the Skipper’s instrument panel and honeycomb grille. Water-cooled engines throughout the range in October 1972. Sedan continued till October 1973, with some overlap with Minica F4 successor, while the coupé lasted an extra year. Van gained bigger bumpers in 1975, and some regulatory changes for 1976.
