SEAT
From AutocadeMartorell-based car maker, Sociedad Española de Automóviles de Turismo, founded 1950, initially building Fiat models under licence. Some models were unique to the SEAT range but had Fiat origins. Fiat’s ownership of the company varied between 6 and 36 per cent, but the Italian company’s refusal to invest more into SEAT led to the severing of the relationship in 1982. Several SEAT-developed models, changed just enough to be dissimilar to their Fiat predecessors, followed. Its Ibiza and Malaga models were further changed, and had engines developed by Porsche. In 1986, Volkswagen took a stake in SEAT, becoming its sole owner in 1990. SEATs today are based on Volkswagen platforms.
