The Ford Consul was Ford of Britain’s first modern postwar design, leading the company’s assault on the UK market from its announcement at the London Motor Show in 1950. A larger revised Mk II model followed for 1956. With the success of the Consul name, the original Cortina was spun off from this line, originally named Consul Cortina. However, the cars dropped the Consul tag over time, and the name disappeared for the rest of the 1960s until it re-emerged with the 1972 model, developed with Ford’s German operations. The Consul name disappeared permanently when the new Consuls were absorbed into the Granada range in 1975.
