Ford Sierra/Ford Sierra Sapphire/Ford Sapphire/Ford P100. 1987–94 (prod. 974,400). 3-, 4- and 5-door saloons, 2-door utility, 5-door estate. F/R, F/A, 1597, 1796, 1993, 1998 cm³ (I4 OHC), 1993 cm³ (I4 DOHC), 2933, 2994 cm³ (V6 OHV). Extensive mid-life facelift for Sierra, finding itself more mainstream as other cars followed its aerodynamic route. Addition of four-door saloon, called Sierra Sapphire in UK and Sapphire in South Africa, with different grille for those markets. Three-door deleted in UK but continued in Europe. Three-litre model in South Africa. Top model Sierra RS Cosworth, or Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth in UK, with four-wheel drive and turbocharged two-litre developing 220 PS, with Sapphire grille for all markets. Sapphire grille adopted through whole Sierra range 1989, even on Continent. South Africa developed P100 bakkie—pick-up truck—based off Mk II and Taunus bits—from 1987. New twin-cam two-litre engine for 1989, in both carburettor and fuel-injected versions. New engines aside, Sierra range backward mechanically as rivals switched to front-wheel drive, making it seem more anachronistic in its sector, though Ford maintained its position through constant improvements in specification. Replaced by Mondeo in 1992 in most markets; P100 continued to 1994.
