F/F, 996, 1397 cm³ (I4 OHV), 1198, 1422 cm³ (I3 OHC), 1390 cm³ (I4 DOHC), 1422, 1896 cm³ diesel, 1984 cm³ petrol (I4 OHC). First Volkswagen group supermini on the A04 platform, shared with Polo IV. Facelift in 2005. Roomy and as well built as others in the Volkswagen group, but some of the eight-valve engines lethargic. Soft suspension, and less than competent handling. Cheap price meant some of the interior plastics were of a poorer grade than that found in equivalent Volkswagens. VRS hot hatch at top of range.
