Volvo V40 (VW). 1995–2004 (prod. 577,701). 5-door estate. F/F, 1588, 1731, 1855, 1948 cm³ (I4 DOHC), 1870 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC). Estate version of S40, with V standing for Versatile. Comments for S40 apply here, as platform and engines are identical. Dull and less well built than Volvos further up the range. Facelift in 2001.

q.v. Volvo S40 (VS)
Land Rover Discovery (L661). 2016 to date (prod. n/a). 5-door SUV. F/A, 1999 cm³ diesel (I4 DOHC), 2999 cm³ diesel, 2995 cm³ petrol (V6 DOHC). Third-generation (though Land Rover calls it the fifth) Discovery, based on the lighter Range Rover platform. Sleeker than before, with a more pronounced cab-backward look, while retaining a lot of the styling hallmarks, such as the stepped-up roof. Aluminium construction meant a weight saving of 480 kg. Seating for seven, configurable from a smartphone with a remote seat-folding app, even though the vehicle is under 5 m long. Ten-inch touchscreen on the dashboard, four 12 V charging points, and up to nine USB ports. Waterproof Activity Key wristband allowed owners to lock the car while enjoying the outdoors; traditional key could be left inside. ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox mated to three engines on launch, including the Ingenium four-cylinder diesel. Production eventually shifted to Slovakia.

Volvo XC60 (V426). 2017 to date (prod. n/a). 5-door SUV. F/A, F/F, 1969 cm³ petrol, 1969 cm³ petrol–electric hybrid, 1969 cm³ diesel (I4 DOHC). Refined, relaxed crossover SUV with decent performance. The brief meant light steering while the air suspension absorbed bumps easily. XC60 takes XC90’s lead, with large infotainment screen dominating the interior, its many functions combined into the system. Minimalist interior. Volvo City Safety standard, with automatic braking if the system detects pedestrians, cyclists and large animals. Optional Pilot Assist offered semi-autonomous driving, keeping the vehicle between the lanes.
