Inside Autocade
Hyundai Trajet XG (FO). 1999–2008 (prod. n/a). 5-door MPV. F/F, 1975, 1998 cm³ (I4 DOHC), 1991 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC), 2657 cm³ petrol, 2657 cm³ LPG (V6 DOHC). Minivan sharing a platform with the Hyundai Grandeur (XG), and gained the XG tag for the domestic market to tie it in with the luxury sedan. Equus suspension, giving it a better ride, though never class-leading. Well equipped, though looked anonymous. Heavy, with adequate handling. Middle-of-the-road refinement and performance. Initially successful, especially LPG version in the face of rising petrol prices. Diesel from 2000. Briefly exported (2001–3) to Japan. World Cup special in 2002. Mid-term changes in 2004. Off the domestic market due to poor sales in 2007, but continued for export into 2008. Its niche was filled in Korea by passenger versions of the Starex van.
Manufacturing location: Ulsan, Korea
Marque: Hyundai | Predecessor: Hyundai Santamo
Ferrari Mondial. 1980–93 (prod. 6,149). 2-door coupé, 2-door convertible. M/R, 2926, 3185, 3405 cm³ (V8 DOHC). Announced to much acclaim at the time with its smart Pininfarina styling (on the old 308 GT4 chassis), Mondial had 2+2 seating and was considered a more usable Ferrari. Mondial 8 at launch, but it met with reliability issues; QV (four-valve head) from 1982, which remedied them, while addressing those who felt the original engine lacked power (160 kW increased to 179 kW). Convertible from 1983. Larger 3·2 from 1985, while more substantial changes followed in 1989 with Mondial t, with engine mounted longitudinally rather than transverse, although the gearbox remained transverse, setting the template for future V8 Ferraris.
Manufacturing location: Maranello, Modena, Italy
Marque: Ferrari | Predecessor: Ferrari 308 GT4
Flagship whose name was derived from Excellent, Quality, Unique, Universal, Supreme automotive, originally a development of a Mitsubishi design. Sold by Hyundai as a rival to the successful Ssangyong Chairman and largely sold only in its home market, though some were exported, usually as the Hyundai Centennial. A replacement was released in 2009 owing nothing to its predecessor: the new model was Hyundai’s own work, with a rear-wheel-drive platform benchmarked against the BMW 5er-Reihe (E60).
Marque: Hyundai | Successor: Genesis EQ900
