Inside Autocade
Lancia Ypsilon (Tipo 846). 2011 to date (prod. 500,000 to November 2019). 5-door saloon. F/F, 875 cm³ (I2 OHC), 1242 cm³ petrol, 1242 cm³ LPG (I4 OHC), 1248 cm³ diesel (I4 DOHC). Rounder, cuter Ypsilon, now with five doors, on stretched Fiat 500 (2007–) platform. Softer and less fun to drive than 500, and not that premium, either, in terms of build quality, engines or interior design. Acceptable ride; longer wheelbase meant rear quite roomy, but Ypsilon hardly proved to be the premium small car Lancia planned. Badge-engineered for UK and Éire as Chrysler Ypsilon. Eventually only sold in Italy, and for many years thought to be the last Lancia car before Fiat retired the marque; Lancia appeared to have been given a stay of execution when Stellantis was formed.

Dongfeng (東風/东风) CA71. 1958 (prod. 30). 4-door sedan. F/R, 2000 cm³ approx. (I4 OHV). First passenger car built by First Automobile Works of China, with bodyshell and interior apeing Simca Vedette (1954–7) and 70 bhp OHV engine based around a Mercedes-Benz 190 unit and chassis. Self-designed three-speed manual transmission. Laboriously built, as China lacked the facilities, and bodies were not cast but beaten to the right shape. Initially badged with Latin letters before Chinese ones replaced them on the order of the Central Committee. Used for propaganda, and Mao Tse Tung even rode in one around launch time, but faded into obscurity after 30 examples.

Peugeot 408 (P54). 2022 to date (prod. n/a). 5-door saloon. F/F, 1199 cm³ (I3 DOHC), 12·4 kWh–1598 cm³ electric–petrol hybrid (I4 DOHC). Fastback crossover, with large (20 in) wheels making it appear more sporty, and related to EMP2 platform-mate Peugeot 308 (T51), sharing windscreen, front door structure, headlights and bonnet. Drag coefficient at a low 0,28. Developed as a ‘saloon of the future’, blending SUV and saloon concepts. Arguably closer to coupé SUVs though Peugeot never mentioned SUVs or crossovers at launch, referring to the 408 as a fastback. Sold alongside Chinese three-box saloon in China.
