Autocade is an international car cyclopædia that’s geographically unbiased, carefully edited for enthusiasts and media who want a quick, accurate reference. There is a greater emphasis on models produced after 1970.

Inside Autocade

Ford Escort Mk II

Ford Escort Mk II.jpg

Ford Escort Mk II (Brenda). 1974–80 (prod. 1,607,000 approx.). 2- and 4-door saloon, 3-door estate, 2-door panel van. F/R, 1098, 1298, 1599 cm³ (I4 OHV), 1835 cm³ (I4 DOHC), 1993 cm³ (I4 OHC). Squared-off, less aerodynamic update of original Mk I, with boxy body, developed jointly by UK and German teams. More glass area and luggage space, with better ride, though very conventional. RS1800 with Cosworth BDA engine and made from 1975 to 1977; superseded by RS2000, which was more of a marketing exercise with the two-litre Pinto engine. RS2000 with four-headlamp slanted plastic nose; Australian RSs (with a detuned version of the Pinto engine) bore the same front end—even the four-door models, making them unique to that country. Estate and panel van continued with same rear ends. Australia also sold a Sundowner model, based on the panel van, with round windows at the back.

Manufacturing locations: Halewood, Merseyside, England; Saarlouis, Saarland, Germany; Cork, Ireland; Homebush, NSW, Australia

Marque: Ford | Model: Ford Escort | Predecessor: Ford Escort Mk I | Successor: Ford Escort Mk III, Ford Laser (1980–5)

Mercury S-55

Mercury S-55.jpg

Mercury S-55. 1966 (prod. 2,916 hardtop, 669 convertible). 2-door hardtop, 2-door convertible. F/R, 428 in³ (V8). Originally a part of the Monterey range, S-55 “muscle car” (428 in³ quoted at 405 hp) returned in 1966, after two-year absence, as a separate line. Lincoln Continental-type styling. Very rare. Independence was short-lived: S-55, with slightly different styling, went back to Monterey range in 1967 (and proved rarer still).

Manufacturing location: St Louis, Missouri, USA

Marque: Mercury | Predecessor: Mercury Monterey (1960–4) | Successor: Mercury Monterey (1965–8)

Maruti Suzuki Celerio (FE)

2014 Maruti Suzuki Celerio.jpg

Maruti Suzuki Celerio (FE). 2014–21 (prod. n/a). 5-door sedan. F/F, 793 cm³ diesel (I2 DOHC), 998 cm³ (I3 DOHC). Maruti replaces the A-star as the segment heats up: Celerio is its response to the Hyundai Grand i10. Fairly roomy, familiar one-litre engine, but mated to an automated manual transmission (with an electronic clutch). Really a city car with skinny tyres, good for economy but not spirited driving. Base models skimp on safety equipment, with airbags optional, and ABS optional across range in the home market. Sales suspended in the UK in 2015 after two magazines discovered brake failures while testing, while Maruti was forced to remedy the problem. Diesel from 2015. Called Cultus in Pakistan, finally replacing the second-generation model of that name. Last of the Pakistani models sold in 2022.

Manufacturing location: Manesar, Haryana, India

Marque: Maruti | Model: Maruti Suzuki Celerio | Predecessors: Maruti Suzuki A-star, Suzuki Cultus (AA44S) | Successor: Maruti Suzuki Celerio (YNC)
