Shared platform with regular Crown, due to cost savings, but distinguished by vertical taillights and higher-spec trim. Carryover six, though V8 now 265 PS (195 kW). Stability control, the first Toyota to be fitted with the feature. Simplified options’ list, in the wake of the bubble economy collapsing. Mid-term changes 1997, with modified grille, new five-speed automatic, cancellation of four-wheel steering, and VVT applied to V8, increasing power to 280 PS.
