Samsung Motors, established in 1994, was part of the Korean chaebol better known for electronics, with models initially licensed from Nissan. However, with the Asian financial crisis, the company was put up for sale, and Renault bought a 70 per cent stake in 2000. It has since increased that by a further 10 per cent. Renault platforms eventually underpinned the Samsung range, and the factory tends to export Renaults and Nissans, with Samsungs reserved mainly for the home market with a few exceptions. In 2022, the company formally became Renault Korea Motors as the deal to use the Samsung brand expired.
