Initially an upscale Ford Taurus, Sable helped Ford take the D-segment in North America, but by the fourth generation models, it was outshone by the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. A brief revival of its nameplate for the 2008 model year kept Mercury in the D-segment before the marque was consigned to history.
