From AutocadeChevrolet Monte Carlo (A-special/G-body). 1978–88 (prod. 1,676,683 approx.). 2-door coupé. F/R, 3291, 3753, 3791 cm³ petrol, 4280 cm³ diesel (V6 OHV), 4298, 4375, 5001, 5714 cm³ petrol, 5737 cm³ diesel (V8 OHV). Downsized Monte Carlo (a foot shorter, 800 lb lighter) on the same platform as the new Malibu, but with larger trunk and less interior space. Similar curvaceous styling initially. Above-average in handling and ride, and reasonable gas mileage for the era. Landau models for 1978 and 1979 had vinyl roof and some extra equipment. Turbo added 1980, the same year Monte Carlo was facelifted. A restyle came in 1981, with a similar nose to 1980, but with more squared off sides. No turbo for 1982, but two diesels added. SS from 1983, with slanted nose, 180 hp from 5·0 V8 and stiffer suspension; biggest V8 for México. T-top option from 1985. LS luxury model in 1986, along with new instrument panel; 200 SS Aerocoupé homologation specials, with sloped rear window, for that year. Aerocoupé became a regular model the following year (6,052 built in 1987).
