Meant to be the “little brother” of the X5, with the mechanicals of the BMW 3er-Reihe (E46). Criticized at launch, X3 wound up being one of the better mid-sized crossovers when its car-based competitors appeared—its lack of off-road ability wasn’t as bad as its rivals’. Plasticky interior remained through most of the run, though there were improvements in other respects. Mid-term revisions in 2006.
