Inside Autocade
Porsche Boxster (Typ 986). 1996–2004 (prod. 160,000 approx., incl. 109,213 in Finland). 2-door convertible. M/R, 2480, 2687, 3179 cm³ (F6 DOHC). Extending the traditional Porsche values downward helped save the company, with Boxster a rewarding sports car that outshone its competitors from BMW (Z3) and Mercedes-Benz (SLK). Excellent grip and handling. Water-cooled engine in the rear a change for Porsche. Same bonnet, front wings, headlights and interior as Porsche 911 (996), although the larger car was on the drawing board first. So successful that extra production had to be contracted to Valmet in Finland. Limited-edition 50 Jahre 550 Spyder in 2004 (prod. 1,953).

Different to the C3 sold in western countries, Citroën developed a version specifically for India. Usual specification as expected for this competitive segment, with 10-inch touchscreen, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, and USB ports. Rivalled Nissan Magnite, Tata Punch, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and similar subcompact cars with chunky, crossover-like styling. Better equipped Brazilian version with 1·0 and 1·6, with an automatic option, from 2022, scoring zero stars in Latin NCAP testing in 2023. Argentinian exports with 1·2 instead of 1·0. Electric model, the ë-C3, from 2023, in India, and related to the car of the same name in Europe that launched months later.

Honda City (ホンダ シティ) (GA1/GA2). 1986–95 (prod. 167,521 sold). 3-door sedan. F/F, 1238, 1296 cm³ (I4 OHC). Honda reverses course: instead of tall and narrow, the second-generation City goes low and wide, with the design philosophy called ‘Crouching Form’. Single cam 1·2 initially, with carburetted 1·3 and injected 1·3 available from 1988. No convertible this time, and lack of a turbocharged version hurt sales. The City nameplate wound up in southeast Asia for a cheap sedan afterward.
