1981 Volkswagen Passat Variant.jpg

Volkswagen Passat/Volkswagen Quantum (B2/Typ 32B). 1980–2002 (prod. 3,345,248 in Germany; over 1,200,000 approx. outside Germany). 3-, 4- and 5-door saloon, 5-door estate. F/F, F/A, 1272, 1296, 1588, 1595, 1715, 1781 cm³ petrol, 1588 cm³ diesel (4 cyl. OHC), 1921, 1994, 2144, 2226 cm³ (5 cyl. OHC). Longer, wider, more contemporary Passat, with new torsion beam rear axle with spring-damper units, but largely the same as before. Three- and five-door hatchback saloons and estate initially, while four-door notchback received the Santana badge. Sold in US as Quantum, while estates were sold with this name in Brazil. Formel E models with high top gear; Syncro models with four-wheel drive related to Audi 80 (B2). Mid-term facelift 1985, whereupon Santana range absorbed into Passat’s in most of Europe. German production to 1988. More substantial refresh in Brazil for Quantum in 1992, following similar changes to Santana the year before. Further changes under the skin in 1996 and a price cut in 1997 to compete with the new Chevrolet Vectra, but deleted in Brazil in 2002 (while Santana continued).
