Volkswagen Passat (B2/Typ 32B). 1980–2002 (prod. 3,345,248 in Germany; over 1,200,000 approx. outside Germany). 3-, 4- and 5-door saloon, 5-door estate. F/F, F/A, 1272, 1296, 1588, 1595, 1715, 1781 cm³ petrol, 1588 cm³ diesel (4 cyl. OHC), 1921, 1994, 2144, 2226 cm³ (5 cyl. OHC). Longer, wider, more contemporary Passat, with new torsion beam rear axle with spring-damper units, but largely the same as before. Three- and five-door hatchback saloons and estate initially, while four-door notchback received the Santana badge. Sold in US as Quantum, while estates were sold with this name in Brazil. Formel E models with high top gear; Syncro models with four-wheel drive related to Audi 80 (B2). Mid-term facelift 1985, whereupon Santana range absorbed into Passat’s in most of Europe. German production to 1988.
