From AutocadeFord Taurus (D186). 1996–9 (prod. n/a). 4-door sedan, 5-door wagon. F/F, 2985 cm³ (V6 OHV), 2966, 3391 cm³ (V6 DOHC). First major revision to Taurus, trying to be as innovative as the original with interior appointments. However, less practical to build for Ford (more time required) with price rising to suit. Not very refined or that strong a performer by mid-1990s’ standards as Japanese caught up. Transmission felt rough. Oval design theme on everything from grille to overall shape to interiors; not favoured by all buyers. Exported with Mercury Sable grille to Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Toyota took best seller crown in 1997 with revised Camry. Minor cosmetic changes in 1998.
