F/F, 1199, 1389, 1589, 1598, 1799, 1998, 2198 cm³ petrol, 1686, 2184 cm³ diesel (I4 DOHC), 1598, 1998 cm³ petrol, 1699, 1995 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC). Highly successful and competent C-segment car, replacing the forgettable Astra F. Strong, well priced performer, very good handling and ride, eclipsed by Ford Focus Mk I a year after launch. Well laid out interior. Hatchbacks, saloon and estate first, coupé adopted Calibra-like C-pillar, trying to compete for the same buyers. Chevrolet Astra in Brazil, with flex-fuel two-litre SOHC unit; unsuccessful four-door Chevrolet Viva in Russia, out of GM–AvtoVAZ venture. Four-door exported as Chevrolet Urban to Chile. Vauxhall Astra in the UK as before, Holden Astra in Australia and New Zealand. Spawned a minivan off the same platform, called the Opel Zafira A. German and UK run till 2004; Polish plant then built Opel Astra Classic till 2009 (also badged as a Holden), but with far cheaper interior materials and a more basic spec. Brazilian production to 2011.
