Cefiro and North American Maxima begin departing at this point, with Maxima taking on a more sporting bias, at least in styling. Built on the same line, but differed in front- and rear-end treatments from the Japanese-market Cefiro and other export Maximas, which were closer to the Cefiro in appearance and spec. Longer wheelbase than predecessor. New grille for 1997 model year; regular equipment upgrades through run. Traction control available from 1999 model year for automatics.
