2003 Kia Carnival II.jpg

Kia Carnival (KV-2/GQ/K55/OK5/FLD). 1998–2005 (prod. 219,400 approx. for KV-2 only). 5-door MPV. F/F, 2497, 3497 cm³ petrol, 2497 cm³ LPG (V6 DOHC), 2902 cm³ diesel (I4 DOHC). Minivan on the Mazda Cronos platform shared with the Kia Credos, launched on the home market with a 2·5 petrol engine from Rover, and a self-developed diesel (the first DOHC diesel made in Korea), which formed the overwhelming majority of Korean sales. Diesel proved troublesome, with numerous recalls. Factory LPG from 1999. GQ series denoted facelifted model from 2001, with improved safety, rated highly in both Korea and US. Improved interior. New common-rail diesel from 2001, to Euro 3 standard. Refined Hyundai V6 with five-speed automatic (a first for an MPV) fitted for US sales as Kia Sedona, beginning 2002 model year; considered underpowered among American competition. Well equipped generally, but missing side airbags, traction control, and power sliding doors; impressive drivetrain warranty in US for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Improved specification as Carnival moved more upmarket in the 2000s.
