Hyundai Stellar (Y). 1983–91 (prod. n/a). 4-door sedan. F/R, 1439, 1597, 1997 cm³ (I4 OHC). Rebodied Ford Taunus 80 (Hyundai was making Cortinas under licence) with attractive ItalDesign body and Mitsubishi engines. Good packaging, simple car, sold on cheapness. Sonata line spun off from Stellar in 1985. Front double wishbones, live rear axle, though MacPherson struts replaced the wishbones for cost reasons, and a Panhard rod added to the rear, from November 1985. Helped Hyundai’s growth in the 1980s and replaced by Y2 Sonata.
