Chinese state-owned manufacturer that began with a licensed version of the original SEAT Toledo, called the Fengyun and later the Qiyun, originally sold through piggybacking an SAIC licence. SAIC eventually held 20 per cent of the firm, which it later sold. Chery then went on to produce versions of the Daewoo Matiz and Daewoo Magnus, which it claimed to have done legally, but GM disputed this. The Tiggo, a clone of the Toyota RAV4, also appeared, though original designs followed. An agreement with Fiat was inked in the 2000s but fell through; a deal with Chrysler also collapsed. It began the Karry, Riich and Rely brands, but by 2012, Chery decided that it had extended its portfolio too far, and they were cancelled. It did, however, manage to tie up with Tata Motors’ Jaguar Land Rover in Changshu, Jiangsu. In 2014, Chery spun off Cowin as a youth-targeted brand. Chery had a share in Qoros, though it sold half of that in December 2017 as its core business ran into further difficulties that year, delivering only 563,000 vehicles, and losing 37,600,000元. By 2018 it had run into financial difficulties, looking to raise investment and giving up majority control. Nevertheless, it was still able to launch the Exeed and Jetour brands during this difficult period, and the youth-oriented ICar in 2023.
