Autocade is an international car cyclopædia that’s geographically unbiased, carefully edited for enthusiasts and media who want a quick, accurate reference. There is a greater emphasis on models produced after 1970.

Inside Autocade

Mercedes-Benz ML (W166)

2013 Mercedes-Benz ML 350 Bluetec.jpg

Mercedes-Benz ML 250 Bluetec/Mercedes-Benz ML 350 Bluetec/Mercedes-Benz ML 350/Mercedes-Benz ML 500/Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG (W166). 2011–15 (prod. n/a). 5-door SUV. F/R, F/A, 2143 cm³ diesel (I4 DOHC), 2987 cm³ diesel, 2996, 3498 cm³ petrol (V6 DOHC), 4663, 5461 cm³ (V8 DOHC). ML loses its aggressive looks and gains smaller engines, some with biturbos to get extra power and up fuel economy. Rear legroom increased, and plusher on the inside—but weight went up as well. Uprated seven-speed automatic to aid economy, optional adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning system, and height-adjustable air suspension. More power as well, to cope with additional weight, thanks to direct injection. Lower, with less ground clearance, as Mercedes-Benz continued to acknowledge the urban use of the ML. Rear-wheel-drive models available; four-wheel-drive ones denoted by 4Matic tag. Refined to drive, but not that entertaining, with the exception of AMG model.

Manufacturing location: Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USA

Marque: Mercedes-Benz | Model: Mercedes-Benz ML | Predecessor: Mercedes-Benz ML (W164) | Successor: Mercedes-Benz GLE (W166)

Rover P4

Rover 110.jpg

Rover 75/Rover 60/Rover 90/Rover 105/Rover 80/Rover 100/Rover 95/Rover 110 (P4). 1949–63 (prod. 130,312). 4-door saloon. F/R, 1997 cm³ (I4 OISE), 2103, 2230, 2625, 2639 cm³ (I6 OISE), 2286 cm³ (I6 OHV). Brand-new, solidly built and engineered, advanced postwar range, inspired by Studebaker Champion (1947–52) and styled by Gordon Bashford. Rover 75 (for 75 bhp) first, with central fog lamp, nicknamed ‘Cyclops’, with large boot and rear seats ahead of the rear axle. Revised grille in 1952, removing the central fog lamp, then more major revisions in 1953, with addition of four-cylinder 60, and 2639 cm³ 90. Original 2103 cm³ increased to 2230 cm³ in 1954, with refresh, including higher rear quarters for a larger boot and a more substantial appearance. New front wings in 1956, along with high-compression 105R and 105S with 108 bhp; S with overdrive, R with complex automatic. Rover 100 from 1960, replacing 90 and 105, and 60 replaced by 2286 cm³ 80. Both replaced in 1962 by 95 and 110, with 2625 cm³ six in different states of tune. Aluminium opening panels initially, heavier steel toward the end. Drove well with strong engines, and smooth sixes.

Manufacturing location: Solihull, West Midlands, England

Holden Gemini (TC)

Holden Gemini SL (TC).jpg

Holden Gemini (TC). 1977–8 (prod. 17,256). 4-door sedan, 2-door coupé. F/R, 1584 cm³ (I4 OHC). Launch of Ford Escort Mk II showed how poor the TX Gemini’s handling and ride were. TC installed anti-roll bar. Minor trim changes, new grille following equivalent Isuzu model in Japan, and removal of Holden–Isuzu badge. Still noisy, and less power (61 to 53 kW) and torque (127 to 111 Nm) thanks to anti-pollution measures to comply with Australian Design Rules (ADR27A).

Manufacturing location: Australia

Marque: Holden | Model: Holden Gemini | Predecessor: Holden Gemini (TX) | Successor: Holden Gemini (TD)
