Toyota Carina (T210). 1996–2001 (prod. n/a). 4-door sedan. F/F, F/A, 1498, 1587, 1762, 1998 cm³ petrol (I4 DOHC), 1974, 2184 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC). Last Carina, as Toyota saw the writing on the wall for its long-running mid-sized sedan, especially with its former compacts now getting up to the same size, and overseas buyers preferring the larger Camry. GT returned with 4A-GE 1·6 with five valves per cylinder (shared with Corolla Levin and Sprinter Trueno), good for 165 PS. Minor changes in 1997 with new door mirrors and inclusion of basic E model. Mid-term changes 1998 with refresh and mechanical upgrades; larger diesel débuted. Deleted in 2001 after the nameplate ran for 31 years; Allion took over, but with a similar formula.
