Third-generation Carina, retaining the boxy looks of the A40 but appearing more substantial. Shifted on to larger [[Toyota Corona (T140)]] platform. Rear-wheel drive retained, the last time for the Carina line. Five-door Surf wagons added 1982. GT-T and GT-TR models from October 1982 fitted with Japan’s first inline four-cylinder DOHC turbocharged engines (the 1·8 3T-GTEU). Mid-term changes 1983. With the front-wheel-drive Carina joining the Toyota range in 1984, the range was rejigged; by 1985 the sporting sedans had been transferred to the front-drive line; the coupé was replaced by the Carina ED hardtop in 1985. Lower sedans, wagons and the wagon-based commercial van continued as RWD to the end in 1988. Dull, dependable transport in most markets, with the front-wheel drive models supplanting this generation for export in many countries. In Europe, it was the Corona, rebadged as the Carina, that succeeded it.
