Toyota Carina (A60/AA60/TA60/SA60/CA60/AA63/TA63/CA67V/KA67V). 1981–8 (prod. n/a). 4-door sedan, 5-door wagon, 3-door coupé. F/R, 1452, 1832 cm³ petrol, 1839 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC), 1486, 1588, 1770 cm³ (I4 OHV), 1587, 1588, 1770, 1968 cm³ (I4 DOHC). Third-generation Carina, retaining the boxy looks of the A40 but appearing more substantial. Shifted on to larger Toyota Corona (T140) platform. Rear-wheel drive retained, the last time for the Carina line. Five-door Surf wagons added 1982. GT-T and GT-TR models from October 1982 fitted with Japan’s first inline four-cylinder DOHC turbocharged engines (the 1·8 3T-GTEU). Mid-term changes 1983. With the front-wheel-drive Carina joining the Toyota range in 1984, the range was rejigged; by 1985 the sporting sedans had been transferred to the front-drive line; the coupé was replaced by the Carina ED hardtop in 1985. Lower sedans, wagons and the wagon-based commercial van continued as RWD to the end in 1988. Dull, dependable transport in most markets, with the front-wheel drive models supplanting this generation for export in many countries. In Europe, it was the Corona, rebadged as the Carina, that succeeded it.
