Started as Suzuki Loom Works in 1909, diversifying into cars in the late 1930s. Plans were interrupted by World War II. Postwar, Suzuki returned to looms, but when the cotton market collapsed in 1951, the company was forced to return to motor vehicles. It began with a powered bicycle in 1952, and launched the Suzulight small car in 1955. Its car range tended to stay in the smaller sectors, and it often does OEM deals with other manufacturers. Through Maruti, it is the market leader in India. Toyota took a 4·9 per cent stake in the company in 2019, while Suzuki took a 0·2 per cent stake in Toyota.
