With the growth of the Mazda BG platform (a four-inch increase in wheelbase), Ford followed suit, with US Escort twinned with Asia–Pacific Laser, though station wagon unique to North American market. Economical with good ride, though noisy, especially compared with contemporary Toyota Corolla (E100), and not that roomy in the back with wheel well intrusion. Poorer grip on lesser models, though GT performance models better with 15-inch tyres.
