From AutocadeFile:1977 Chrysler Sunbeam LS.jpg Chrysler Sunbeam (R429). 1977–81 (prod. 200,000 approx., incl. Talbot). 3-door saloon. F/R, 954, 1295, 1598 cm³ (4 cyl. OHV), 2172 cm³ (4 cyl. DOHC). Cut-down Avenger, developed in then-record time (19 months) to provide Chrysler with a small car to compete with Ford Fiesta. Glass hatch necessitated high sill, so not that practical, but crisp lines meant that Sunbeam was a contemporary looking car. Ti model redeveloped from old Hillman Avenger Tiger in 1979, with 1·6, but the pièce de résistance was the Sunbeam Lotus, which was shown the same year. Talbot marque from 1979, though oddly paired with Chrysler pentastar badge until 1981, when car gained a facelift with flush headlamps. Long life given it was a stopgap, though replacement never came; Peugeot 104-based Talbot Samba replaced Sunbeam in 1981.
Marque: Chrysler | Predecessor: Hillman Imp | Successor: Talbot Sunbeam
