Ford moves away from the previous Explorer’s truck-based chassis to something purpose-built, though it was still truck-like to drive. However, handling and ride were improved thanks to independent rear suspension, and OHC engines delivered good power, albeit at the expense of fuel economy. Wheelbase up by 2 in, width by 2·5 in, aiding interior room as well as the vehicle’s stability. Third-row seating now optional. Cabin and interior materials on the dull side. Side curtain airbags and reversing sensors among safety features. See also Mercury Mountaineer (2002–5) and Lincoln Aviator (2003–5).
