Revision as of 22:00, 3 December 2019File:1972 Toyota Celica GT.jpg Toyota Celica (RA20/TA20/RA21/TA22/RA23/TA23/RA24/RA25/TA27/RA28/RA29/RA35/TA35). 1970–7 (prod. over 1,000,000). 2- and 3-door coupé. F/R, 1407, 1588 cm³ (I4 OHV), 1858, 1968, 2189 cm³ (I4 OHC), 1968 cm³ (I4 DOHC). Frequently referred to in the US as Toyota’s Mustang, the compact coupé line was based on the Carina platform. Like the Mustang, the Celica had a wide range of options for customization. Well built, the first Japanese car line made with robots on the assembly line, ensuring consistency. Full-feature dashboard. Independent front suspension and four-link rear setup with dampers, though handling was only above-average; GTV had sport suspension, improving this. Harsh ride. Bit cramped at rear, with visibility leaving something to be desired. GT’s DOHC unit from Yamaha. Liftback from 1973, with clearer Mustang inspiration and a different grille; two-doors would get this grille for 1974. Competition history helped boost Celica’s image. Mid-term changes 1975, when wheelbase extended 70 mm, with gains in length and width.
