On a MQB platform as predecessor, eighth-generation Golf débuted a new logo for Volkswagen (gentler, in a hope of discarding the negativity of Dieselgate earlier in the 2010s), and hybrids launched at the same time as the rest of the range (both plug-in and 1·5 with 48 V mild hybrid functions). Same wheelbase, width and height down, length up 20 mm; smaller frontal area, with claimed reduction in fuel consumption. High-tech, with claims of assisted driving working at up to 210 km/h, and swarm intelligence data from other vehicles up to 800 m away to warn of hazards. Digital dashboard with head-up display.
