Volkswagen kept the Golf formula the same for the second-generation model, smoothing out the corners in line with trends. Improved safety, corrosion protection and standard equipment, with five-speed gearboxes standard for models above 51 kW. Dependable, fairly refined range. More options, including ABS and power steering. Syncro four-wheel-drive models introduced 1986, including raised-height Golf Country from 1990, made by Steyr–Daimler–Puch. Rally homologation special (prod. 5,000) featured 1763 cm³ engine with 118 kW. GTI plusher in this series, and included five-door model; GTI Syncro available. Ten millionth Golf (including Golf I total) manufactured 1988 as part of this series.
