A fresh start for Toyota, replacing Starlet, Tercel, Corsa and Corolla II lines in most markets with a cute, Sotiris Kovos-designed supermini. Simple interior with central speedometer for most models. Japanese Car of the Year for 1998–9. Diesel from 2002. A better all-rounder than Honda Fit (GD), though not as roomy. Three-box sedan sold as Toyota Platz. Sold in most non-Japanese markets as Yaris, and Echo in North America and Australasia. Toyota production to 2005, but Tianjin production to 2012 (with 998 and 1342 cm³ engines).
