Standard 2000.jpg

Standard 2000. 1985–7 (prod. 3,232 approx.). 5-door saloon. F/R, 1991 cm³ (I4 OHV). Indian version of Rover SD1, in an attempt to revive Standard, and created to challenge Hindustan Ambassador (1959–2014). Expensive, at Rs. 2·12 lakh. Differences to British model, with higher ride height, and fitting of old Standard Vanguard 1991 cm³ unit, dubbed the HCC206, which was being built at the time for the Standard 20 Van ( Leyland 15) but in diesel form. Differing reports about the Vanguard unit, though it is accepted that the fuel consumption was less than half what was claimed (35 mpg; cars delivered as low as 14 mpg), especially with air conditioning. This led to a government investigation, from which Standard never emerged, though there are some hearsay accounts claiming the government favoured Maruti as a manufacturer, and that a 2000 with improved fuel consumption was developed, but remained stillborn.

Manufacturing location: Madras, Tamil Nadu, India

Marque: Standard
