From AutocadeRenault 16. 1965–80 (prod. 1,845,959). 5-door saloon. F/F, 1470, 1565, 1647 cm³ (I4 OHV). Not the first hatchback, but certainly one that popularized the format in the mid-’60s, the brainchild of Gaston Juchet and Philippe Charbonneaux. Four-wheel independent suspension, although Renault’s use of torsion bars led to asymmetric wheelbases: the left side was longer than the right. Good roadholding. Engine mounted behind gearbox and transaxle, north–south, helping shift the weight toward the centre of the car. Disc brakes. Very roomy and practical. European Car of the Year winner for 1966. The 1565 cm³ engine was added in 1968, automatic transmission from 1969, and the largest 1647 cm³ one in the five-speed TX in 1973. Plastic grille in 1974, replacing aluminium one. First French car with an electric window option.
