Peugeot 106. 1991–2003 (prod. 2,798,200 approx.). 3- and 5-door saloon. F/F, 954, 1124, 1294, 1360, 1587 cm³ petrol, 1360, 1527 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC), 1587 cm³ (I4 DOHC). Development of Citroën AX on the same floorpan, greatly improved with more room. Dynamically very sound, especially cooking XSI, GTI, Rallye and S16 models, though cramped versus competitors toward the end of the run. Meant to be the replacement for lower-end 205s, but lost that model’s cuteness, in favour of a more square look. Also not as entertaining to drive as 205 in its more basic guises. Noisy, especially at high speed, but a good performer. Mid-term facelift in 1996, when it spawned a twin, the Citroën Saxo.
