1982 Opel Kadett.jpg

Opel Kadett/Vauxhall Astra (T80). 1979–85 (prod. over 2,000,000, incl. 36,300 approx. GTE). 2-, 3-, 4- and 5-door saloon, 3- and 5-door estate. F/F, 993, 1196 cm³ (I4 OHV), 1196, 1297, 1598, 1796 cm³ petrol, 1598 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC). Opel goes transverse-engined, front-wheel drive for its T-car successor to fight the Volkswagen Golf I, though unlike its predecessor, it remained in Europe. Kadett D, and its Vauxhall Astra twin, originally featured a small boot with external hinges, rather than a hatchback. Panel van versions of the three-door estate were also sold. One-litre models very rare, with only 10 of the 29 kW model, while the rest were 37 kW and mostly exported to Italy. SR and GTE sporting models, the latter from 1983, with a 1·8 OHC unit. South Africa had 1·2 OHV, 1·3, 1·6 and 1·8 (GTE) models. Replacement Kadett E from 1984 in most markets; from 1985 in South Africa.
