Mitsubishi Pajero (L041/L042/L043/L044/L049/L141/L144/L146/L149). 1981–91 (prod. 632,724). 3-door convertible SUV, 3- and 5-door SUV. F/A, 1997, 2555 cm³ petrol, 2346, 2477 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC), 2972 cm³ (V6 OHC). Mitsubishi launches an off-roader to rival the Toyota Land Cruiser, shown at Tokyo 1981 and on sale the following year, based on the ladder frame and front (double wishbones with torsion bar) and rear suspension (semi-elliptical leaf spring axle) of the Forte pick-up. Well balanced, with 50–50 front and rear weight distribution. Rear suspension of more upmarket models changed to three-link and coils. Five-passenger, five-door model from 1983. Competition history in the Paris–Dakar, winning on its first attempt in 1983. Camel limited-edition model 1987.
