Mercedes-Benz A140/Mercedes-Benz A160/Mercedes-Benz A160 CDI/Mercedes-Benz A170 CDI/Mercedes-Benz A190/Mercedes-Benz A210/Mercedes-Benz A21 AMG (W168). 1997–2004 (prod. 1,100,000 approx.). 5-door saloon, 5-door LWB saloon. F/F, F/A, 1397, 1598, 1896, 2084 cm³ petrol, 1689 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC). Innovative compact car, with “sandwich-floor” construction that saw the engine slide under the cabin in the event of a crash, and highly efficient and roomy. However, the A-Klasse was hampered by its failure in the Swedish “elk test”, which saw the car tip over in sudden direction-changing manœuvres, forcing Mercedes-Benz to recall early models, fitting electronic stability control and modifying the suspension. Not that reliable, either, as Mercedes quality plummeted. LWB from 2001.
