From AutocadeHolden Commodore (VL). 1986–8 (prod. 151,801, incl. Calais, 500 HDT SS Group A, 750 Group A and other HDT and HSV). 4-door sedan, 5-door wagon. F/R, 1998 cm³ (I4 OHC), 2962 cm³ (I6 OHV), 2962 cm³ (I6 OHC), 4987 cm³ (V8 OHV). Comprehensive revision of VK, with smoother nose with small grille, in typical 1980s’ European fashion. Less than stellar sales of earlier Commodores meant there was insufficient money for revising the engines, so the big news at the time was the use of a Nissan unit shared with Skyline (R31) model, signalling the end of the traditional Aussie Holden six. (Holden found it easier fitting this unit rather than rework its six for unleaded fuel.) Four for export only. Turbo on OHV six; more power and torque on V8. Last Commodore on the Opel Commodore C platform, and Holden began turning its fortunes around.
