From AutocadeReplacement for Escort gained a new name—Focus—from one of Ford’s show cars in the early 1990s. Nearly a world car, Focus was sold in Europe, the Americas, parts of Asia and Africa. It was a huge departure from Escort, with striking styling showcasing Ford’s ‘New Edge’ philosophy, and with excellent chassis dynamics. This sealed Focus’s reputation, with the qualities retained for the second-generation model in 2004 in a larger form—this model was sold worldwide with the exception of the US and Canada. US Focuses were still successful but had quality niggles from the 1999 model year; they stayed on the original C170 platform into the start of the 2010s, although there was a reskin for the 2008 model year. The third-generation Focus, débuting in 2011, will unite US and European versions again.
