Bentley Arnage LWB.jpg

Bentley Arnage. 1998–2009 (prod. 1,182 with 4·4; 2,273 Red Label to 2002). 4-door saloon, 4-door LWB saloon. F/R, 4398 cm³ (V8 DOHC), 6750, 6761 cm³ (V8 OHV). Twin to the Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph, but with a twin-turbo BMW V8 instead of that model’s V12. Larger wheels and brakes than Rolls-Royce, and more sporting; Arnage was also the better seller, thanks in part to Volkswagen’s takeover around this time, when Rolls-Royce was sidelined, and to Bentley’s rising image. BMW-engined model renamed Green Label in 2000: in September 1999, the old 6·75 V8 had returned at VW’s insistence (with 835 Nm), reengineered for the model, to end reliance on BMW supply, and dubbed Red Label. The turbo OHV V8 was 224 kg heavier, necessitating redesigned front suspension, while the car lost its front–rear balance that it had with the BMW unit. Larger brakes were also fitted, along with other improvements funded by VW. Green Label deleted 2000; LWB (an extra 250 mm), dubbed RL, from 2001, while Mulliner programme saw RL lengthened even more depending on customer requirements. One-off state limousine for HM Queen Elizabeth II built off Arnage platform, commemorating her Golden Jubilee in 2002. Mid-term changes in 2002, as Arnage T introduced, with twin turbos to its reworked 6·8-litre engine along with Bosch engine management, delivering 456 hp. Milder Arnage R, also from 2002, replaced Red Label directly, with ESP and twin turbos, developing 405 hp. Upgrades in 2006 saw Mitsubishi turbos replacing Garrett ones, with R getting 460 bhp and T 500 bhp; six-speed automatic introduced in the third quarter of the year.
