From AutocadeAudi 100 (C2). 1976–82 (prod. 4-door 887,647, Avant 49,652). 2- and 4-door saloon, 5-door hatchback. F/F, 1588, 1984 cm³ (I4 OHC), 1921, 2144 cm³ petrol, 1986 cm³ diesel (I5 OHC). When launched, the Audi 100 was a neat, and typically Germanic large saloon. Airy cabin, nice ergonomics and neat road manners marked it out as a very competent steer. However, the arrival of its inline five-cylinder engine in 1978, which made it the world's first petrol five, added some much needed charisma, and a fine soundtrack. Audi claimed it was ‘as economical as a four, as smooth as a six’. Perhaps it was, but BMW and Mercedes-Benz buyers were unconvinced.
