Autocade is an international car cyclopædia that’s geographically unbiased, carefully edited for enthusiasts and media who want a quick, accurate reference. There is a greater emphasis on models produced after 1970.

Inside Autocade

Chevrolet Aveo (T300)

2011 Chevrolet Aveo.jpg

Chevrolet Aveo/Chevrolet Sonic (T300). 2011 to date (prod. n/a). 4- and 5-door sedan. F/F, 1229, 1364, 1398, 1399, 1598, 1796 cm³ petrol, 1248 cm³ diesel (I4 DOHC). Replacement for Daewoo Gentra, now with the Chevrolet marque in the home market with the demise of Daewoo. Continued the T codes from Daewoo. Gamma II platform, shared with Opel Corsa E and a development of the Corsa D’s one. Much smarter, boxier appearance than before, with hidden rear door handles. Dubbed Sonic in North America; Holden Barina for Australia and New Zealand (till 2018). Interior materials still sub-par, but very roomy, economical and with a good ride. Dull to drive, but far better than predecessor. Facelifted in China in 2014.

Manufacturing location: Bupyeong, Korea; Orion Township, Michigan, USA; Rayong, Thailand; Yantai, Shandong, China

Marque: Chevrolet | Model: Chevrolet Aveo | Predecessor: Daewoo Gentra (T250)

Ford Mondeo Mk II

Ford Mondeo Mk II.jpg

Ford Mondeo (CDW162). 1997–2001 (prod. n/a). 4- and 5-door saloon, 5-door estate. F/F, 1598, 1796, 1998 cm³ (I4 DOHC), 1753 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC), 2544 cm³ (V6 DOHC). Wonderful to drive and now with looks to match, answering the criticism that the Mondeo was too bland. New Edge styling shared (with some variation) with US Ford Contour, though rear end unique to Europe. Central section untouched, though rear legroom improved thanks to new front seats. Two-litre revised to have less power but more refinement, though car still sprightly, showing how good the chassis originally was. ST24 and ST200 models (2·5-litre with 170 and 205 PS respectively) emphasized performance credentials. Taiwanese-built Mondeo M2000 models, with Mercury Mystique front end for 2000 and Mondeo rear end, sold into 2001.

Manufacturing locations: Genk, Belgium; Port Elizabeth, South Africa; Taoyuan, Taiwan

Marque: Ford | Model: Ford Mondeo | Predecessors: Ford Mondeo Mk I, Ford Telstar (GF) | Successors: Ford Mondeo Mk III, Ford Mondeo Metrostar

Nissan 180SX (S13)

Nissan 200SX.jpg

Nissan 180SX (RS13/KRS13/RPS13/KRPS13). 1989–98 (prod. 115,000 approx.). 3-door coupé. F/R, 1809, 1998, 2389 cm³ (I4 DOHC), 2389 cm³ (I4 OHC). Attractive three-door liftback coupé on Nissan Silvia (S13) platform, with 180SX name for the home market, and exported as 200SX and 240SX depending on engine choice. Even when it was fitted with the two-litre in 1991, the home market stuck with the 180SX name. The 240SX was developed for North America first and the 180SX adapted from it for Japan; it shared interior, doors and windscreen with the Silvia. Automatic transmission available, though 90 per cent of deliveries were for the manual. Retractable headlamps as regular Silvia headlamps could not be certified in North America. Mid-term changes in 1991, with front bumper remodelled, among other changes. When Silvia was replaced in 1993, the 180SX stuck around in its existing form. Further changes in 1996, identified by round taillights.

Manufacturing locations: Kyushu, Japan; Yokosuka, Kanagawa, Japan; Hiratsuka, Kanagawa, Japan

Marque: Nissan | Model: Nissan 180SX | Predecessor: Nissan Gazelle (S12) | Successor: Nissan Silvia (S15)
