Volvo 760 (NV80/P31/Projekt 1155/Projekt 01). 1982–90 (prod. 221,309). 4-door saloon, 4-door LWB saloon, 5-door estate. F/R, 2316 cm³ petrol, 2383 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC), 2849 cm³ (V6 OHC). Original reports indicated that 760 would be called 464 and 465, replacing the 240- and 260-series. The reality was that the 760 only supplanted the latter, while the 240 in fact outlived it. Boxy, the result of Volvo’s long development time due to financial difficulties and the car’s design having been frozen in the late 1970s, when such shapes were still fashionable, but out of step when launched in 1982. Shape previewed with a 1980 concept car. However, buyers didn’t care: Volvo had its reputation for solidity and quality, eschewing fashion, and in the 760’s case it remained justified. Similar powertrain to 200 but with new body and chassis, and more luxury features at the top end. Very good handling and performance from PRV engine at launch; improved automatic transmission leading to fuel savings. Diesel from Volkswagen, and not the most reliable, while turbo four-cylinder completed the engine range. Facelift in 1987 along with multi-link independent rear suspension, which improved handling further. Executive was an LWB model converted by Yngve Nilssons Karosseri AB in Laholm, and officially a Volvo. New taillights in 1990.
