Volvo 740. 1984–92 (prod. 1,430,000 approx., including 760, 940, 960 and S90). 4-door saloon, 5-door estate. F/R, 1986, 2316 cm³ petrol, 2383 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC), 1986, 2316 cm³ (I4 DOHC). Downmarket variant of boxy Volvo 760 for the 1980s. More basic, with four-cylinder engines, and simpler carburettor engines in lesser models: B200 and B230 replaced B19 and B23. Catalytic converter added 1989 for domestic market. Facelift in 1990, in anticipation of the Volvo 850 launch, new dashboard in 1991, same as the 940 successor. Known for durability and quality, and succeeded by 940, which was on the same base.
