Gol gets a facelift to bring it into line with Volkswagen’s corporate look, but little changed under the skin. Better stability and passive safety, and good performance, but cramped compared to rivals, showing the limitations of the old BX platform. One-litre turbo introduced with this version, but eventually pulled due to reliability problems. Minor facelift in 2002. Total Flex model from 2003, which could run on either alcohol or petrol, with 1·6-litre engine; one-litre bi-fuel model from 2005.
