Volkswagen Gol (AB9). 1994–9 (prod. n/a). 3- and 5-door sedan. F/F, 997, 999, 1595, 1781, 1984 cm³ petrol, 1588 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC), 999, 1984 cm³ (I4 DOHC). Second-generation Gol another all-Brazilian effort, developed from the old platform, but with a wheelbase stretch. Rounded shape helped drop drag coefficient to 0,34 (from 0,45). Not known for its build quality at the time. GTI from 1996 featured 16-valve option, the first Brazilian car with this feature, using an imported German engine. Ford CHT engine at base originally, Volkswagen units replaced it in 1997. Larger engines all VW’s own. Multi-point injection in 1997 for 1·6 and 1·8; later for 1·0, which also came with a 16-valve option.
